12 piece altekruse puzzle

12 piece altekruse

This family of puzzles is unusual in that all of the pieces are identical. It has many variations. W. Altekruse, an American of German-Austrian decent, originally patented the 12-piece version in 1890. The actual origin of the puzzle is unknown, yet the name 'Altekruse' means 'old cross' in German. This may be just a coincidence.

The original puzzle consisted of 12 pieces, but Stewart Coffin discovered 14, 36, and 38 piece variations.
